Social media collaborations with San Diego-based content creators highlighted special shopping hours for National Thrift Shop Day, leading to record-breaking sales for the boutique.
San Diego, CA, October 14, 2025--The Home Start Thrift Boutique had a record-breaking sales month in August, thanks to its National Thrift Shop Day celebration on August 17 that attracted local shoppers, media coverage, and social media attention. First celebrated in 2014, National Thrift Shop Day is now a nationwide event that highlights local thrift shops while promoting the sustainability, cost savings, and charitable support that shopping at a thrift store provides.
National Thrift Shop Day was celebrated on Sunday, August 17 this year. As the Home Start Thrift Boutique is normally closed on Sundays, the store decided to host special shopping hours from 10 am to 2 pm, specifically in celebration of National Thrift Shopping Day. Additionally, the store decided to create an entire weekend event out of it, offering discounts of 40-50% off its already low prices on second-hand and vintage clothing items, jewelry, furniture, and household goods.
The boutique also collaborated with San Diego-based content creators—all of whom feature local businesses, fashion, and thrifting—to showcase the thrill of thrifting locally at Home Start Thrift Boutique and announcing the special shopping hours for Sunday, August 17.
Instagrammers @dorkyshayshay, @reynapizarro, @sandiegoloveletter, and @urlocalfunkyfairy shared their personal shopping experiences at the Boutique, highlighting their vintage, trendy, and one-of-a-kind finds. Their content helped introduce the boutique to a broader audience, reinforcing its reputation as a go-to destination for style-savvy and socially conscious shoppers in San Diego and the surrounding area.
In addition to the massive social media buzz, local media coverage amplified the day’s impact. KUSI Fox 9 was on-site for Sunday’s special shopping hours and interviewed Home Start CEO, Joe Buehrle and Thrift Boutique Manager, Miranda Armida, where the two discussed the boutique’s unique offerings and how every purchase supports Home Start’s programming that provides safe, stable, and nurturing homes for children in the San Diego community.
The social media exposure and buzz surrounding National Thrift Shop Day helped the boutique achieve record-breaking sales over the weekend.
Saturday, August 16, was a record-breaking day with sales exceeding $1,500. Sales for the special shopping hours on Sunday, August 17 grossed $1,000.
With the increased attention on the store, the Boutique recorded over $11,000 in net sales for August, making it the strongest sales month of the year. This was followed by an equally strong September with net sales over $9,000.
The Home Start Thrift Boutique was thrilled with the success of its National Thrift Shop Day shopping weekend and is so grateful to its collaborators and local media for putting a spotlight on the store and to everyone who came out to shop and support Home Start’s mission of helping San Diego families and children. The store, a beacon on Adams Avenue in Normal Heights, is open year-round and has special sales events sprinkled throughout the year.
